Our First Backpacking Adventure To St. Simon Island and Crabbing Adventure
A few weeks ago the kids and I set out on yet another backpacking adventure with an addition to my normal crew, my nephew who will be spending the Summer with the kids and I. Needless to say the entire crew was ready for a mini getaway so we all grabbed a backpack each, jumped in the SUV and headed to St. Simons Island. We had to make a mini detour on the highway in Savannah so that I could pick up my niece who also joined us on the journey. I had a chance to chat with my baby sister and snag a quick photo before we got back on the road.
Our final destination was Jekyll Island but we decided to spend a night in St. Simons and soak up a little of their culture. Honestly this was my first time actually staying in St. Simons and although I am originally from Savannah, I never cared to visit St. Simons because I knew from listening to others that it wasn’t much to do there, the entire area shuts down after 8PM, 9 at the latest and it just wasn’t a destination on my travel planner. We arrived after a 3.5 hour drive which isn’t that bad coming from Savannah and settled into the Sea Island Palms for a one night stay. Upon arrival the very first thing that the kids wanted to do was go swimming. We changed into our swim wear and headed to the pool. After all that’s a great way to end a road trip in cool refreshing water and a ton of splashing.
We ended the first day of our backpacking chronicles on a great note and awaited what the next day would bring…..
On our second day in St. Simons we decided to get out an explore since it was early in the day and that provided us with ample opportunity to see just what St. Simons had to offer. We ended up at the lighthouse museum and then taking a stroll on the pier. I had no idea that this was the go-to hang out on the weekend and the place where you can walk the pier, fish and crab. The kids had never gone crabbing before and since the weather was perfect we purchased some equipment from the local general store, bait from a local grocery store and set out to get our hands on some yummy crabs.
The boys were looking over the pier to see if they had anything in their net and lo and behold this happened……
After an hour or so our persistence paid off and we hit the jackpot. The other families that were on the pier were so helpful with instructing us on where to purchase all of the materials and exactly where to let our net down in order to reap a bountiful harvest.
JACKPOT!!! What can I say? The kids had one wild adventure and although this was their very first time crabbing they are now hooked. Stay tuned for our Jekyll Island adventure and an upcoming trip to Savannah where we will be live streaming our next crabbing adventure.
