DECA International Career Development Conference – Atlanta 2014
On yesterday I was blessed to volunteer to judge the competitive events at DECA’s International Career Development Conference here in Atlanta, GA. I participated as one of the judges for the MMS- Marketing Management Series Events at the Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC). If your not familiar with DECA here’s a bit of information on their organization. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.
DECA is organized into two unique student divisions each with programs designed to address the learning styles, interest and focus of its members. The High School Division includes 190,000 members in 3,500 schools. The Collegiate Division (formerly known as Delta Epsilon Chi) includes over 15,000 members in 200 colleges and universities.
DECA Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit student organization with members in all 50 United States, the District of Columbia, Canada, China, Germany, Guam, Hong Kong, Korea, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The United States Congress, the United States Department of Education and state and international departments of education authorize DECA’s programs.
This was my first year volunteering and it will not be my last. The students in grades 9-12 were all given a marketing scenario in which they had to create a mini presentation to present to the judges within the allotted time provided and once they sat before the Judges they only had about ten minutes to explain their plan. As a person who works in Marketing I was utterly impressed with the knowledge of these students whom have traveled from all over the world to compete against each other for awards, scholarships and prizes. The experience was truly breathe taking and I can not wait to assist them again in 2015. I want to thank DECA for a job well done and for having me out as a judge. I encourage all of my colleagues to volunteer for DECA along with me on next year.
